Hawaii storm 2025 new updates: Heavy rains, flash floods hit Big Island and Maui with road closures and power outages

In late January 2025, a potent storm system swept through Hawaii, bringing torrential rains, flash floods, and high winds to the Big Island and Maui.

The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings as streams rapidly swelled, particularly affecting the North Kona district on the Big Island, encompassing areas from Keauhou to Kailua-Kona.

By January 31, up to three inches of rain had fallen on the island’s west side.

The heaviest rainfall occurred in western Maui, where up to 10.32 inches were recorded within a 24-hour period ending on the morning of January 31.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HI-EMA) reported significant damage, including road closures, water main breaks, and power outages across both islands.

Despite these challenges, there were no reports of fatalities, injuries, or missing persons. HI-EMA urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant and prepared for potential hazards.

As the storm system progressed southeast along the island chain, it began to weaken, leading to improved conditions by February 1.

Meteorologists anticipated further weakening of the storm, reducing the likelihood of additional severe weather impacts.
